Amazon is expanding delivery infrastructure in Maryland and Virginia.

Amazon is expanding its supply chain and operations infrastructure in the states of Maryland and Virginia.

The e-tail giant has opened two delivery stations in central Maryland and two delivery stations in Virginia. Delivery stations support the last mile of Amazon’s order process and are designed to help speed up deliveries for customers. Packages are shipped to a delivery station from neighboringAmazonfulfillment and sortation centers, loaded into delivery vehicles and delivered to customers.

Amazon’s two Maryland delivery stations are located in Baltimore and Hanover. A new 72,000-sq.-ft. facility is the first delivery station inBaltimorecity, while a new 194,000-sq.-ft. facilityis the company’s third delivery station inHanover. Amazon now operates 15 delivery stations across the state of Maryland.

The company is also now operating two new delivery stations in the Hampton Roadsarea of Virginia, a 165,000-sq.-ft. facilityinNorfolkand a 111,600-sq.-ft. facility inHampton. Amazon now has 15 delivery stations across the commonwealth of Maryland.

Amazon says the four new delivery stations will create hundreds of full and part-time associate jobs; in addition to hundreds of driver opportunities for Amazon’sdelivery service partnersandAmazonFlex drivers.

“We would like to thankAmazonfor their investment in this state-of-the-art distribution facility,” said Donnie Tuck, mayor of Hampton, Va. “A generation ofHamptonresidents did much of their shopping at the former Kmart on this site, and now the redeveloped building will serve a new generation of online shoppers.Amazonis bringing full and part-time jobs to our city, as well as bringing our packages a little closer to our doorsteps.”

Amazon also plans to open a new career center in Chesapeake, Va. The facilitywill serve as a hiring and orientation hub for the company’s Virginia operations facilities inChesapeake,Suffolk,Norfolk,Hampton, andVirginia Beach.

The company is expanding its infrastructure in Virginia as it continues moving forward with its second headquarters in Arlington, Va. In February 2021, Amazon submitted its proposed development plans for phase two of the headquarters, which will eventually be a 4 million-sq.-ft. campus. The plans call for2.8 million-sq.-ft. of new office space distributed across three, 22-story buildings.

According to Amazon, it has created more than 29,000 jobs inMarylandsince 2010. Over the last decade,Amazonhas invested more than$9.5 billionacross the state, including infrastructure and compensation. These investments have contributed an additional$8.5 billionto theMarylandeconomy and have helped create 31,000 indirect jobs on top of Amazon’s direct hires. In addition, more than 31,000 independent authors and small and medium businesses inMarylandare selling to customers in Amazon’s store.

In Virginia, Amazonsays it has invested more than$34 billionacross the commonwealth over the past decade, including infrastructure and compensation. These investments have contributed an additional$27 billionto theVirginiaeconomy and have helped create 96,000 indirect jobs on top of Amazon’s direct hires. In addition, more than 42,000 independent authors and small and medium businesses inVirginiaare selling to customers in Amazon’s store.
