The regions of Hogwarts Legacy's open world that surround Hogwarts Castle are full of mysteries, including special flocks of butterflies that can lead you to unique rewards. This page contains verified information on all 14 locations of Butterflies and the Chests they can lead you to. Our interactive checklist (see menu at the top of the page) groups the Butterfly Chests into 9 locations -- with links to our interactive map -- to make it as easy the track your progress as possible.

As you explore the many regions known as The Highlands around Hogwarts, you may come across groups of butterflies (also known as a kaleidoscope of butterflies). They can be difficult to spot from a distance, but will appear on your mini-map when close. You'll also be able to get icons for nearby butterfly locations to appear when using Revelio from the air, and once revealed will stay on your map - but not if you move too far away for fast travel.

Once you draw close to the butterflies, they will take off in a certain direction and make you give chase. They will often wind along paths, but can sometimes dip into fields or wooded areas, and even past enemies you'll have to clear out first.

Once you follow the butterflies for long enough, they will reveal a Conjuration Recipe Chest. It's important to note that while they look like Collection Chests found in enemy camps or hamlets, they won't count toward the region total, but will still give a random Conjuration Recipe to use in the Room of Requirement.

See the list below to find the locations of Butterflies in each main region they have been known to appear in around The Highlands.

South Hogwarts Region Butterflies 1

You can find a group of butterflies on the higher ridgeline above the Quidditch Pitch in the South Hogwarts Region. From the pitch, look to a high trail up in the southwest passing a large tree grove, and the butterflies will appear right in front of a large natural stone archway.

As soon as you spot the butterflies, they'll start flying off to the south, but you won't have to chase them far. As soon as they pass through the stone arch, they'll veer off to the right and land by a rocky wall to reveal a chest.

South Hogwarts Region Butterflies 2

This group of butterflies can be found across the lake from Hogwarts Castle to the east, and can be found south of the Hamlet of Aranshire. Look for the group just below a main path overlooking the railway bridge, with a moving dragon shrubbery nearby.

Once you get close, the butterflies will take off down a ledge heading north, and pass under a nearby Merlin Trial. Follow them as they wind below some cliffs to stop below the Merlin Trial's two small plateaus in a rocky outcropping where the chest can be found.

Hogsmeade Valley Butterflies

You can find a cluster of butterflies off to the East of Hogsmeade in the Hogsmeade Valley. Look for a low path that runs alongside the train tracks north of a Niffler tree, and you can spot the butterflies where the road forks into a path going up the hill to the southeast.

Watch for Dark Wizard Poachers are you approach the butterflies and they take off up the hill south. They'll dodge around the main path and more poachers to finally loop around a Merlin Trial up in the hills. After spinning around, they'll stop by a far south rock wall to reveal a chest.

North Hogwarts Region Butterflies

This group of butterflies can be found along the main river that runs from the Korrow Ruins in the west down towards the main lake around Hogwarts. You'll need to travel from the East North Hogwarts Region Floo Flame along the river going west, and staying on the north side past a Bandit Camp until you see them by a main path.

Once spotted, follow the Butterflies as they wind up a nearby sloping path towards the Bandit Camp, and then double back across a ridge to the north where some Mongrels may be located, before stopping at the top of the bluff to reveal the chest.

Forbidden Forest Butterflies 1

This group of butterflies are connected to the Hogsmeade Side Quest, Follow the Butterflies, and as such will not appear until you have accepted the quest from Miss Willardsey in the Three Broomsticks.

Once you accept the quest, head to the southern tip of the Forbidden Forest and cross the bridge from the Forbidden Forest Floo Flame to find the butterflies on the side of the main path going north.

They'll quickly take off and dip down to the left to float along the small river - but you can stay up on high ground to avoid the Dugbogs and Dark Wizard Poachers who are likely fighting nearby. Keep following the butterflies north until they come back to the path and float up northeast to find a spot to reveal a chest for you.

Forbidden Forest Butterflies 2

This group of butterflies are hard to come across in the claustrophobic confines of the Forbidden Forest, as it's tough to navigate, even on broomstick. You'll want to skirt the eastern edge of the forest along the bottom of the large cliff, and take the farthest east road you can going north until you spot some butterflies near where poachers and spiders are likely fighting.

Once you get close enough, the butterflies will take up the far northeastern path exiting the woods, but may pass by some mongrels and dark wizards you'll need to contend with. Keep following the butterflies until they cross a small wooden bridge and stop at the back of a large ruined house with enemies inside, and reveal a chest outside.

North Ford Bog Butterflies

This butterfly swarm is located on the far north edge of the bog region, just to the northeast of the hamlet of Pitt-Upon-Ford and it's Floo Flame. By leaving the town from its main path, you'll find the butterflies along the side of the road as you move east.

Once you find them, the butterflies will take off east across a large bridge that spans a chasm (with spiders below - but they shouldn't be close enough to be a problem). After crossing, it will fly up a hillside path and turn left just before reaching a river bridge. Follow the butterflies to a spot in front of a waterfall to get the chest.

Hogwarts Valley Butterflies 1

You can find this group of butterflies due east of the Central Hogwarts Valley Floo Flame, in a field by some trees that's just below a long train track bridge. It's often guarded by a few spiders, so be wary when running up to investigate.

After spotting them, the butterflies will begin to move eastward, going under one of the train bridge's openings and up the hill on the far side. Look out for other spiders or mongrels as you climb the hill - but it won't be long before the butterflies veer right and stop on a small hill next to a winding path leading towards the hamlet of Brocburrow.

Hogwarts Valley Butterflies 2

This kalediscope of butterflies can be found off on the western side of the Hogwarts Valley, due west of the hamlet of Keenbridge. You'll need to follow the main trail out of town and to an old ruin that doubles as an Ancient Magic Hotspot, where you'll find the butterflies behind some rocks further west behind the house.

Watch out for mongrels as you follow the butterflies trail around the path further west, and then slightly north as it moves up an incline and out of a ditch to reach the spot where a chest will appear.

Hogwarts Valley Butterflies 3

Another group of butterflies can be found in the southeastern section of Hogwarts Valley, east of the hamlet of Keensbridge up a large river that's just below a bandit castle camp, along the rocks near a waterfall.

Once you draw close, the butterflies will start floating down the river west, criss-crossing the river (but you can remain on the northern side if you like). Wait until they double back to the north side and stop near the river's edge among some flowers to reveal a chest.

Feldcroft Region Butterflies 1

You'll find these butterflies lying in wait on the northwestern edge of a small bandit camp that rests above a much larger camp carved into the rocky cliffs below, in the south part of the Feldcroft region that's located southeast of the Feldcroft Catacomb Floo Flame.

If you haven't already cleared the topside camp of goblins first, be wary as the butterflies will dart into the camp before floating up a large rockslide of debris and circling back to a high ledge above the camp to the northwest. You can also just fly on your broom above the camp and avoid them alltogether, before touching down in a small grove overlooking the camp where the chest will be revealed.

Feldcroft Region Butterflies 2

This group of butterflies can be found in the northern section of the Feldcroft region, and are found on a high bluff above a main path near a large ruin that hides a Treasure Vault, north of the large gatehouse and located across the water northeast of the Feldcroft Castle.

Watch out for goblin patrols as you near the butterflies at their high spot on the rocks, and they'll quickly start floating down the steep rocks cliffs to the west, so you may want to drop down carefully or ride a broom to the lower rocky ledge. Follow them further north back towards the ruins before they stop to reveal a chest.

Poidsear Coast Butterflies 1

This group of butterflies can be found in the northern part of Poidsear Coast, just southeast from the Coastal Cave exit and Floo Flame, past a small ruin filled with goblins, and close to a Merlin Trial where several paths diverge.

Once you get close, the butterflies will begin zigzagging around the area, going east above the Merlin Trial and down a steep slope, then south and doubling back west along the main path and up along some bluffs. They'll double back again further south along a high ridge line overlooking the nearby Poidsear Castle, before stopping short of a giant tree and Mooncalf Den to reveal a treasure chest.

Poidsear Coast Butterflies 2

You can find another kaleidoscope of butterflies right by the South Poidsear Coast Floo Flame, located by a bridge leading to an Ancient Magic Hotspot at a large ruined building.

Sure enough, once you get close to the butterflies, they'll take off across the bridge towards the ruined building that holds the Ancient Magic Hotspot, and loop around the outside pathway of the high up ruined building, before crossing around the back of the building to a small grove of flowers around the back where a chest will appear.

Clagmar Coast Butterflies

This group of butterflies has taken up residence near a dangerous bandit camp in the far northwestern bluffs of the region, up high on a hill just to the west of the camp itself.

Thankfully, once you get near the butterflies, they'll start to float down south along a lower path away from the bandits, and curve off to the east to pass by a group of Ashwinder Eggs before revealing a chest nearby that you can loot.
