The purpose of a dry clutch is the same as a wet clutch. The only difference between the two types of clutches is that the dry ones aren't covered in oil. Without the oil, the clutch can't stay as cool, which causes dry clutches to be noisier and wear out more quickly.

Dry clutches have a smaller window of engagement, and their bite point can be a bit harsh. They're good on a track, but not ideal for city traffic. The biggest benefit of a dry clutch is that it doesn't lose any power due to not working against engine oil viscosity.

Like the wet clutch, a dry option will still provide that connection between your engine and transmission. The key difference between the dry and wet clutch is the oil. A dry clutch doesn't have the oil covering it. Thus, the dry clutch won't have the same cool temperatures as a wet one.

The advantage of a diaphragm clutch is greater clamping power than a conventional three-finger Long style clutch yet without high pedal effort. What's more, as diaphragm clutch discs wear clamping power increases over the life of the clutch, which improves clutch performance.

The transmission isn't merged with the engine like on a tranny, so from that standpoint, the engine doesn't have to circulate its oil to the clutch to cool it down. The clutches on cars are generally more robust (bigger surface area) so they can withstand more heat. Wet clutch just doesn't seem necessary.
