The upcoming Mac mini redesign will see the machine feature a total of five USB-C ports, with three on the back and two on the front, similar in style to the current Mac Studio.
That's according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, who was first to report that the next-generation Mac mini is set to be redesigned – the first such change to the machine since 2010.
The Mac Studio has four Thunderbolt 4 ports on the rear. On the front, the M2 Max model features two USB-C ports (up to 10Gb/s), while the M2 Ultra has two Thunderbolt 4 ports (up to 40GB/s). The combination and speed of the five USB-C ports on the redesigned Mac mini is not known.
What we do know, however, is that the new model will not include the two USB-A ports that the current version has. Their removal is likely because they are considered to be legacy connections, plus the redesign is making the machine smaller, so space considerations could also have been a factor. Ethernet, HDMI, and 3.5mm audio ports are said to remain.
The new machine will reportedly retain the aluminum shell and approach the size of an Apple TV, but it may be slightly taller than the current model. People working on the new device say that it is "essentially an iPad Pro in a small box," according to Gurman.
Suppliers in China are set to begin shipping the new Mac mini models with the M4 chip in early September, with the M4 Pro model shipping a little later in October.
