What is Salzburg Mozartkugel?
When you read the travel blog focused on „what to eat in Salzburg“ or „Salzburg food guide“, you will notice that they often mention the Mozart Chocolate balls.
What is it, actually?
The Mozart chocolate balls or Mozartkugel is a small round chocolate covering the Marzipan, Nougat, and pistachio. You will see this almost at every corner in Salzburg town when you are in Salzburg. Besides that, you will also find the Mozartkugel in nearly every supermarket in Austria. They are wrapped in red and gold foil.
However, they are not the original ones.
Where can I find the original Mozartkugel, then?
In this blog, I will guide you to where you can find the authentic Mozartkugeln. Before I guide you on where to find the Mozartkugeln, I would love to give you a brief history.
Paul Fürst created Mozartkugeln in 1890. It is made by hand and contains a marzipan and pistachio core wrapped in nougat and dipped in dark chocolate so-called „Original Salzburger Mozartkugel“. Due to the uniqueness of the ingredients, it quickly became the most popular sweet in the city. Therefore, it catches other people‘s eyes, and imitation follows. Although people can find the Mozartkugeln almost everywhere in Austria, the original can still be found only in Salzburg Old Town, wrapped in a beautiful silver foil with a blue Mozart portrait – and made by Confiserie FÜRST in Salzburg Old Town.

Are they still made by hand?
Yes, Fürst’s Mozartkugel is produced the same way they did in the past. They put a ball of pistachio and marzipan covered by nougat on a stick and then dipped it in chocolate. Of course, you will see the imperfection of the shape since it is not perfectly round, and each looks different. But that makes the Original Salzburg Mozartkugel special and is a must-try when you are in town!
There are four places where you can find this Original Mozart chocolate ball.
It is the place in which Paul Fürst opened his patisserie in 1884. In this place, you will enjoy a wide range of Austrian pastries and cakes, such as Apple Strudel, Dobos Torte, Sachertorte and many more. In cold weather, you can enjoy hot coffee and tea along with the chocolate balls or other sweets the café offers and in summer, they provide homemade ice cream to boost your energy from the heat.
This place also offers Austrian pastries and Mozartkugel to enjoy with your coffee in Salzburg. The Mozart torte is a must-try, made out of nougat and pistachio covered in Chocolate. Moreover, You can walk to Mirabell Gardens and the palace within a few blocks.
This place is not a cafe shop nor a place to enjoy the Mozart cake. However, they offer a wide range of original Mozartkugel products. So if you are looking for a souvenir or a gift for your beloved ones, this shop is for you.
If you plan to go for a coffee afterwards, you can walk to the cafe in Brodgasse 13. It is just a few minute’s walks from this place.
The last shop is located in Salzburg’s most famous shopping street as well as the birthplace of Mozart. Moreover, there are also many restaurants and cafes in this alley, such as Restaurant Meissl, Restaurant Blaue Gans Salzburg Gasthaus and many more.
However, if you crave a sweet or plan to repurchase it back home, this is the place for you.
