Basic skills are developed capacities that facilitate learning or the more rapid acquisition of knowledge.

Basic Skills Instruction is supplemental instruction in either Language Arts Literacy or Mathematics. Instruction and support are provided in the basic concepts and skills that students need in order to be successful in their classroom.

Basic skills are the ability to read, write and speak in English and use maths in everyday life. Skills needed to use basic technology such as phones, laptops, tablets and computers to carry out a range of everyday activities are increasingly considered as basic skills, and are especially relevant at work.

The CBST (Criteria Basic Skills Test) is designed to evaluate your math and verbal skills. It paints a broad picture of your ability to learn, train, and pay attention to details. You'll have 20 minutes to answer 40 questions on language skills, spelling, basic grammar, and math.

Skill testing presents the candidate with a series of questions or tasks that mimic the day-to-day tasks of the role they're applying for. These tests assess the candidate's current proficiency in a specific skill and potential for further development.

The CBST is a 40-question multiple-choice test with a 20-minute time limit. The test consists of a wide range of verbal and mathematical questions. The difficulty of the questions increase slightly as the candidate progresses through the test. Calculators are not allowed for the test.

Examples of types of skills assessment tests

For example, a newspaper searching for an editor might set an English test that assesses whether candidates could pick misspelled words from a list of options, identify errors in passages of writing and make ambiguous sentences clearer.

Works well independently and takes responsibility for their own learning. Effectively applies critical thinking skills to solve problems and analyze information. Shows excellent organizational skills and manages their time effectively. Demonstrates strong communication skills, both in written and verbal forms.

There are three types of skills: functional, self-management and special knowledge. Functional skills are abilities or talents that are inherited at birth and developed through experience and learning. Examples are: making decisions, repairing machines or calculating taxes.
