When and how are fingerprints formed? ›

The whorls, arches and loops that make fingerprints unique are produced during fetal development by waves of tiny ridges that form on the fingertip, spread and then collide with each other — similar to the process that gives a zebra its stripes, or a cheetah its spots.

These folds eventually cause the surface layers of the skin to fold too, and by the time a fetus is 17 weeks old – about halfway through a pregnancy – its fingerprints are set.

The fingerprints are produced from a layer in the skin called the papillary layer, which is a layer within the dermal layer of skin. It produces an extra thick layer to form the ridges of fingerprints.

Now, a paper published February 9 in Cell has solved the mystery, revealing not only the process by which fingerprints are formed, but also the genes responsible. And, it turns out, our distinctive prints stem from the same phenomenon that gives zebras their stripes and leopards their spots.

At Buenos Aires, Argentina in 1892, Inspector Eduardo Alvarez made the first criminal fingerprint identification. He was able to identify Francisca Rojas, a woman who murdered her two sons and cut her own throat in an attempt to place blame on another.

The fingerprint is formed in the womb, latest information suggests that the patterns are probably formed at the beginning of the 10th week of pregnancy. Fingerprints consist of natural secretions of the sweat glands that are present in the friction ridge of the skin.

Do fingerprints change with age? ›

Fingerprints do not change. However, it can be more difficult to capture our fingerprints as we age. This is because the skin loses elasticity with age, and the patterns become less prominent due to the thickening of ridges and furrows.

The ridge-to-ridge feature size of a newborn fingerprint can be as small as 125 microns, as shown in Figure 4, from our data on hundreds of newborns and infants. This is much smaller than the 450-micron distance for a typical adult ¹⁷.

At 4-5 months old, your precious unborn baby has now formed unique markings and ridges. Then, at 6 months, your unborn baby has now developed a full fingerprint pattern with loops, whorls and arches.

As the fingers grow, new ridges and branches form. Between 17 and 19 weeks gestation, a layer of keratin coats the surface of the skin. Smaller, secondary ridges form out of uneven keratin growth. Any factor that can influence friction in the womb can influence a fetus's fingerprint pattern.

The pattern of loops and whorls on your fingerprints was fixed three months before you were born. You can scar your fingerprints with a cut, or temporarily lose them through abrasion, acid or certain skin conditions, but fingerprints lost in this way will grow back within a month.

Like many other complex traits, studies suggest that both genetic and environmental factors play a role. A person's fingerprints are based on the patterns of skin ridges (called dermatoglyphs) on the pads of the fingers. These ridges are also present on the toes, the palms of the hands, and the soles of the feet.
